Goals for General Music Studies for Non-Majors:
To provide opportunities for exploration and development of:
A base of musical experience to appreciate significance of music and its relation to culture and aesthetics
An appreciation for the arts through the study of music and the experience of music making
Critical thinking through the study of music in the classroom and in ensembles
Connections between classroom-based coursework and hands-on music making in ensembles
Awareness of how musical involvement can provide a vehicle for artistic expression in our lives
Opportunities:
Private Lessons: There is an additional cost for one-on-one instruction.
Any student taking private lessons can be recommended by their private lesson instructor to perform on convocations, or to give a solo recital
- Ensembles require an audition
Music courses are available to the non-major if prerequisites are fulfilled
- Work positions for students provide further involvement in music and performance-related activities
A music minor is declared through the Registrar’s Office and requires the signature of the department chair. Music department faculty are available for advising during faculty office hours.
ISPs which include Music in the program title:
To ensure basic minimum competency in music the following requirements are needed for an ISP which includes music in the program title:
Review by the music department
Major instrument/vocal audition
Theory I, II (MUSI 140, 142)
Aural Skills I, II (MUSI 141,143)
4 semesters of 1 hour lessons on the major instrument
4 semesters of major ensemble: at least one major ensemble each undergraduate year for a total of 4 credits
Attendance at music department convocations during semesters when student is enrolled in private lessons
Convocation performance each semester of private lesson instruction
Concert attendance as for a music major for major ensemble credits when student is enrolled in major ensemble
