Doug D. is a geneticist and the most recent addition to the department (2006). He has long enjoyed working with the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, to study gene dosage effects and gene silencing. His current research focuses on the unusual evolutionary history of the Osiris gene cluster. The Osiris genes encode apparent membrane proteins of unknown function and comprise the largest conserved syntenic block of genes in the insect genome. Doug’s Hartwick classes include Genetics, Molecular Biology of the Cell, and Immunology. He loves to explore the outdoors with his dogs and kids and enjoys birding, softball, playing the flute, and beekeeping.
