Prof. Jack Moulton, Matt Woeppel, Charlie Hitch, and Adam Parsells in a senior project meeting The Department of Computer and Information Sciences offers a program uniquely tailored to provide students with excellent preparation for exciting careers in computer science and information science.

The program has a number of special features:

  • Small classes and close interactions with faculty and other students.
  • A strong emphasis on practical experience, including internships, directed studies, independent studies, and a capstone senior project.
  • Many students take nationally recognized certification exams at the end of courses.
  • The Department has an upper class lab, affectionally known as the CISC Clubhouse by students, that has about $60,000 worth of computer, many of which have single or dual 64-bit processors.
  • The Department has an agreement with Microsoft to provide students with free copies of the latest operating systems software (like the new Vista), web development tools, and software development tools (like Visual Studio.NET).
  • Our graduates do extremely well in graduate school and in careers after they leave Hartwick.

For a small college, Hartwick has a remarkably diverse set of offerings in the computer area. While at Hartwick a student can choose any of the following five options:

  • Computer Science Major
  • Information Science Major
  • Computer Science/Electrical or Computer Engineering 3-2 Program with Columbia or Clarkson
  • Computer Science minor
  • Information Science minor
  • Cognitive Science minor (a cross-disciplinary program between Computer Science, Psychology, and Philosophy)
