First Year Student Orientation

New Student Orientation - 'Wick 101:
The first stage of orientation is the New Student Orientation program. This program welcomes new students to campus and will help prepare you for an exciting first semester. Students enrolling for Fall 2008 should choose from one of the following date options:

Saturday, May 10
Sunday, June 1
Monday, June 30
Monday, July 7

During Orientation, you will take Writing and Math Placement exams, meet with an advisor to begin the course registration process, learn more about Liberal Arts in Practice (Hartwick's liberal arts core curriculum), and meet new and current students. It is a great way to get to know your Hartwick campus and community better. We also offer a family component to the program, so family members can experience an orientation of their own (after all, it's also a transition for them!).

Participation in an Orientation event is mandatory (unless distance or special circumstances prevent attendance and special permission is granted to waive the requirement).

To register call 888-HARTWICK or sign up on line!

Course Registration
:
Students will begin the registration process during Orientation. Prior to the Orientation event you will fill out a Course Planning Worksheet. You will have the opportunity to review this worksheet with an academic advisor during Orientation, before completing and finalizing your course preferences. After the last Orientation event, staff in the Office of Advising and Registration will complete the registration process and assign your fall term courses. You will be notified in early August when your courses are ready for you to view on WebAdvisor, your personal online Hartwick account.

Awakening:

Awakening is Hartwick's optional adventure- and challenge-based orientation program, held at our Pine Lake Environmental Campus from Sunday, August 24 - Friday, August 29. To sign up or learn more about this exciting program, visit the Awakening Web page.

International Student Orientation:

International students should plan to arrive on campus Tuesday, August 26 and attend the International Student Orientation on Wednesday, August 27 and Thursday, August 28. For more information, contact Jenifer Chambers, director of the Center for Interdependence.

Welcome Weekend
: Begins Friday, August 29!
Welcome Weekend kicks off with the arrival of all new students on campus and our campus-wide Convocation celebration, an annual tradition that marks the beginning of a new academic year.

After moving into residential halls, you will participate in four days of social and informational events. It's a time for beginning new friendships, exploring campus life, and settling in to a new life at Hartwick. Students also will receive their notebook computers and buy books for Fall semester during Welcome Weekend. Welcome Weekend runs through Monday, September 1 and classes begin on Tuesday, September 2.

First Year Advising
:
Once Fall semester begins, you will be assigned a faculty advisor who is one of your Fall semester professors, making it easier for you to get to know your advisor and develop a relationship that enhances the advising process. Students who have declared a major generally will be assigned an advisor in their major department. Once you declare a major, you can change to an advisor in your declared major. For more information about course schedules, declaring a major, and general curriculum requirements, see the Academics tab on the main New Student web site.
