Connecting the Classroom to the World means students working alongside professors-getting hands-on training and actively participating in the learning process. At Hartwick, learning experiences enable connections-from those connections come a deep understanding of the world and opportunities for you in it.

Personalized Education. We've found that nothing helps students develop more effectively than close relationships with faculty. At Hartwick you'll have a faculty advisor who will get to know you as a person. Our student to faculty ratio is 12:1, and the average class size is 18. These numbers mean that faculty spend time meeting one-on-one with students to work on essays, problem sets, and student research-or just to talk about life.

Students and Faculty Working Together. At Hartwick, students and faculty work together on a wide variety of projects, from scientific research to artistic interpretation to social service projects abroad. Hartwick's faculty are engaged leaders in their fields, committed to personalized teaching and involving students in collaborative research--integrating the real world with the classroom. The result: you will be well prepared for the opportunities that lie ahead.

Senior Thesis. At Hartwick, every student submits a senior thesis, which is a great opportunity to explore a subject deeply and work closely with faculty. If you're an art or theatre major, you may choose to put up an exhibition or do a public performance to demonstrate a level of mastery in your major. Most Hartwick students regard the thesis as one of their defining academic experiences at Hartwick.

Freedman Prizes for Collaborative Research. The Freedman Prize recognizes superior student-faculty collaborative research work that prepares for the senior project required of all Hartwick students. Because this work can begin as early as the student's first year on campus, the competition is open to students in all four class years and majors.
