Zsuzsanna Balogh-Brunstad, Assistant Professor of Chemistry. M.S., University of Pecs, Hungary; Ph.D., Washington State University
Research interest include chemical and biological weathering of minerals, microbe-mineral-water interactions, biofilm processes, water quality and contamination, bioremediation, base cation nutrient cycles, and watershed based hydrochemistry.  Dr. Balogh-Brunstad teaches Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Geology, Geochemistry, Hydrology, General chemistry and courses for non-science majors.

Richard Benner, Associate Professor of Chemistry. Ph.D., University of Denver
Research interests include the development of novel, state-of-the-art chemical instrumentation for the measurement of samples important in environmental chemistry, the petrochemical industry, food and flavor industries, and air pollution research. He is the inventor or co-inventor of several commercially available instruments, including the Sulfur Chemiluminescence Detector. Dr. Benner teaches Analytical Chemistry, Instrumental Methods of Analysis, and General Chemistry.

Mark S. Erickson, Associate Professor of Chemistry. Ph.D., Louisiana State University
Research interests include organic and organometallic conducting polymers, polycyclic aromatic compounds, and the synthesis of retinoids as anticancer drugs. Dr. Erickson teaches Organic Chemistry, Fundamentals of General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, and Advanced Laboratory Methods.

Research interests include cavity ring-down spectroscopy. Dr. Dudek teaches Physical Chemistry, General Chemistry, and courses for non-science majors.

Andrew J. Piefer, Assistant Professor of Chemistry. Ph.D., New Mexico State University.
Research interests include biomolecular interactions, especially related to viral and host cell proteins and nucleic acids; tissue culture techniques; recombinant protein expression and purification; virus assembly and budding. Dr. Piefer teaches Biochemistry, Fundamentals of General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, and courses for non-science majors.

Susan M. Young, Associate Professor of Chemistry. Ph.D., University of Colorado at Boulder
Research interests include synthesis and reactivity studies of main-group inorganic compounds, and the design and use of educational technology.  Dr. Young teaches Inorganic Chemistry, Advanced Inorganic Chemistry, General Chemistry, Accelerated General Chemistry, and courses for non-science majors.

Cynthia Decker, Technical Assistant
The Hartwick College Chemistry Department is kept humming by our technical assistant. Cynthia has a B.S. in Biology from Trinity College and brings a wide range of experiences to the department. Known throughout the building as the "Pink Flash" (for her rose-colored lab coat), Cynthia is the department's guarantee that all labs run without a hitch.
