Ubiquitous Technology

Technology is everywhere at Hartwick.  The College strongly recommends that students purchase a laptop computer, complete with applications and networking software, from one of our approved vendors.

Every student has access to a personal 100 Mbps network connection in his or her room in the residence hall.  There are hundreds of additional places where students can connect to the campus network.  In addition, wireless is available in many campus buildings.

Perusing this website will show how persuasive technology has become on campus.

Students in the CISC Department also have access to the advanced computers in CISC Clubhouse.  These computers are all connected by a Gigabit network, to which the students can connect their notebooks.

The Help Desk

Since every Hartwick student, faculty member, and staff member uses a computer, there are about 2,000 computers on campus. An enormous support operation is required.

The Hartwick Technology Resource Center (or Help Desk) is entrusted with this task.  At its core are 15 to 20 Student Technology Assistants who answer the phone, fix computers, train users (including faculty), and perform a myriad of other tasks.  Most of the Computer and Information Science majors work there at some point, and many rise to positions of significant responsibility in supervisory roles.

This kind of real-world experience can really help in getting that first job.
