Fight Cancer & Bioterrorism

Please join students and faculty in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences in running a screen saver from Grid.org.  By doing so your computer's unused CPU cycles will be used to search for drugs to treat cancer, cure smallpox, or counteract bioterrorism agents.

World-wide over two million computers are running the software developed by United Devices to search for drugs likely to be effective in combating things like cancer.  Every computer that participates brings us a tiny bit closer to finding a cure.  Here is how to participate.

  1. Use your web browser to go to www.grid.org.
  2. Select projects at the top.
  3. On the left you can learn about the current projects
    • PatriotGrid
    • Smallpox Research
    • Cancer Research
  4. Pick the project to which you wish to contribute and select Download Now.
  5. Save the file ud_agent_setup.exe in a convenient place.  When the download is complete, double click the file to run it.
  6. United Devices will ask you to take a minute to register.
  7. Once the program is running, you can control it with the buttons in the lower right.  The rightmost button (a downward pointing triangle) will minimize the program.
  8. The program will run in the background.  The icon is a small bluish oval in the lower right corner of your desktop.  You may want to double click it occasionally to see what drug your computer is currently testing.

Thank you very much for assisting in this important work.  If you have any questions please contact Dr. Robert Gann (gannr@hartwick.edu).
