Purpose
This program is designed to attract students with previous college experience in another discipline to the nursing program at Hartwick College. It also offers current nursing majors some flexibility, should they choose to study abroad for a given semester or elect to double major. Typically students who qualify for this program are:

Students entering this program have two options:
Entrance Requirements
Current nursing majors must be in good academic standing in the College with at least a cumulative GPA of 2.7, must have completed all the prerequisite courses, and must have the recommendation of his/her academic advisor as well as approval from the Department of Nursing to enter this program.
Transfer students must complete the admissions process, pay the appropriate fees, complete all the prerequisite courses, submit transcripts, submit all required health forms and hold a current CPR certification (American Health Association - Healthcare Provider or American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer) in order to register for this program. Students transferring from another nursing program must have two letters of reference from nursing faculty at their previous school.
Summer Sequence
The nursing and physical assessment courses offered in the first two years for nursing majors in the Hartwick curriculum will be taught in the summer. The following courses will be offered in 2010:
June Term
Nursing 134 - Fundamentals of Nursing (4 credits) focuses on the foundational theories of nursing as well as acquisition of the fundamental skills necessary for professional practice. (Theory & Lab)
July Term
Science 144 - Physical Assessment (4 credits) – focuses on the synthesis of knowledge from the biological and behavioral sciences in learning skills in assessment, data collection and physical examination.

August Term
Nursing 234 – Medical-Surgical Nursing I (5 credits) - introduces students to the physical, psychological, and sociological aspects of illness as experienced by the adult client. Aging and cultural that have an effect on nursing care are stressed. (Theory & Lab)
Students will be in class and lab or on clinical units Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Some Saturdays may also be necessary to accomplish the course work and to allow for holiday time.
Fall Semester
Following the summer sequence program options, students become full-time students taking the same courses as the traditional pre-licensure students at either the sophomore or junior level.
Cost to Students
The cost of these summer courses is offered at a discounted rate for 2010 at $410.00 per credit.
Room and Board
Rooms will be available on campus during the summer for a fee. The Commons (College dining hall) may be open during a portion of the summer.
Health Requirements
Hartwick College requires a physical examination, immunization record, and other health related forms which are part of the new student workbook. These forms need to be completed and returned to Perrella Wellness Center on campus prior to the beginning of course work.
Professional Liability Insurance
Students are required to carry $2,000,000 / $5,000,000 limits of liability coverage. The cost of the policy is approximately $20 / annually. Your college account will reflect this cost when you are billed.
Uniforms, Clinical Photo ID and Nursing Tote Bag
Uniforms are ordered through the Hartwick College bookstore and must be worn to the clinical agencies off campus, beginning with the first course. The Hartwick uniform is a navy top with white skirt or pants and white shoes. Photo ID nametags are a part of the uniform. Photos are taken in the Commons at a pre-arranged time once you arrive on campus. The Nursing Tote Bag containing stethoscope, blood pressure cuff and other equipment are sold in the bookstore.
