Exhibit: Quiet Waters: The Art of the Canoe

Local Artists Baker & Johngren

A reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, 2007.

Quiet Waters: The Art of the Canoe,  consists of five beautifully restored canoes from the turn of the 20th century as well as canoe memorabilia, antique canoe articles from Harper’s Weekly, canoe models, and a collection of color nature photographs by Peter Johngren of the Heatherspray Studio.  The photographs have been loaned to the museum by Johngren, as well as Scottie Baker, of Fly Creek, NY.  Baker is a canoe and wilderness enthusiast and is the owner of the restored canoes.  Some of the vessels in the exhibit have been photographed by National Geographic Magazine and Ralph Lauren.  A sixth Algonquin birch bark canoe is included in the exhibit; this canoe was recently donated to the Yager Museum by alumnus Dean Cowen. The exhibit is not only beautiful, but gives an up-close look at these crafts, which are currently used mostly for recreation, but that once played a vital role in the everyday life and survival of  earlier inhabitants of this land.  Anybody with an interest in art or outdoor recreation will love this exhibit and the unique insight it gives into the world of canoes.  Quiet Waters is currently on display in the Main Gallery, and will remain there until June 29th.

The Yager Museum of Art & Culture is open from Tuesday to Saturday from noon to 4:30 p.m. It is closed on Sundays, Mondays, and academic holidays.
