A replica of the Guilford Angel, an outstanding example of American folk art, is on view at Hartwick's Stevens-German Library, located on the 4th floor of Yager Hall, through Monday, December 2. Included in the exhibition, which is part of the Angel Tour Project, is a photo display covering the history of the angel.
Known as the Archangel Gabriel, the Guilford Angel was recently carved by the Chenango Wood Carvers as an exact replica of the original angel that once hung in the portico of the historic AngelInn (now The Pillars) in Guilford Center, NY. The original 170-year old angel is on view at the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City.
According to Guilford Town Historian Thomas Gray, the original primitive angel was designed as a tavern sign for the Angel Inn, a stagecoach stop for travelers, and was made by an itinerant wood carver.
The exhibition is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by the Chenango County Council for the Arts.
