The Transition from High School to College
Welcome to Hartwick College. As Hartwick’s Coordinator of Disability Services, I look forward to working with you during your transition from high school to college. To help make your journey to college a smooth one, I have prepared a special slide show presentation for students with disabilities, which should answer some of your initial questions. Please take a few moments to view the presentation by clicking here. (You will need Microsoft PowerPoint to view the slide show; at the File Download prompt, save the file to your computer instead of opening it directly).
Additional resources to assist students with the transition from high school to college are available at going-to-college.org and Help for College Students with Disabilities from Wrightslaw.com .
If at any time you have questions or concerns, please call or email me.

Information about the Writing and Math Placement Exams
The student who requires testing accommodations during the Writing and/or Math Placement Exam should contact the Coordinator of Disability Services (jacobsenp@hartwick.edu) to discuss this request at least one week prior to the exam. Accommodations can be requested only by the student.
Appropriate documentation justifying the need for the accommodation should be mailed or faxed to the Coordinator of Disability Services at least one week prior to the exam.
The Coordinator of Disability Services will review documentation to determine appropriate accommodations for the Writing and Math Placement Exam and courses throughout the semester. In the event that documentation review does not occur in a timely fashion prior to the Writing Placement Exam, we will, in good faith, provide temporary testing accommodations for the Writing and Math Placement Exam provided the student makes the request to the Coordinator (607-431-4546) one week prior to the Exam.
Both the Writing and Math Placement exams are 50 minutes in length. The Math exam states that no calculators are to be used during the exam. We are adhering to this requirement although a qualified student with a disability my request extended time on this exam. It is to the student's advantage to demonstrate his/her true algebraic knowledge and be placed in an appropriate math level than to score higher and be expected to take higher level math courses.
