Paul Windrath enters his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Hartwick swimming and diving program.
Windrath returned to the Empire State after being away for 31 years. Since 1998, the native of Rome, N.Y., served as head coach for the boy's and girl's swimming programs at Red Wing High School in Minnesota. During his career at RWHS, he piloted the girls to the 2002 state title, and led the boy's teams to second place efforts in 1999, 2000, and 2002; coached five girls teams to sectional titles, and coached 11 individual/relay state champions.
Windrath, who earned his bachelors degree from Dartmouth in 1976, has been active in the master's swimming community. During his career, he has been the national record holder in the 100 and 200 back events, as well as sharing the 400 medley and 400 and 800 free relay records. In addition, he broke the world masters mark in the 200 back in 1994. A four-time Masters All-American (1979, 1989, 1994, 1997), Windrath won USMS national titles in 1989, 1994, and 1997, as well as captured a YMCA Masters title in 1994. He has also served in a few different administrative capacities within the Masters swimming community.
In college, Windrath held the varsity school record in the 200 back, and held the school's freshman mark in the 100 back.
Among his other accomplishments include swimming 2000 lengths of the pool for the Millennium, participating in the 2004 Escape from Alcatraz; bicycled across country in 2003 and then bicycled from Alaska to Vancouver in 2005.
Windrath's wife, Mary Beth, is also a competitive swimmer and synchronized swimmer.
