All new students take a First-Year Seminar either in the fall or January Term of their first year. A First-Year Seminar is an academic course to help students with a successful academic transition to college. Each seminar is limited to no more than twenty students and only students in their first year may take a seminar class.
Faculty advisors to new students teach seminar courses. So, the First-Year Seminar is a great opportunity to connect early with a faculty member in an important and meaningful way. In addition to the faculty member teaching the course, student mentors participate in all First-Year Seminars. The student mentor is an upper-class student who works closely with the professor during the course and is there for students if they need assistance.
There are several out-of-class components to the First-Year Seminar that take place with the student mentor. There are opportunities to visit and become acquainted with the Stevens-German Library, to learn about career services, and other programs that assist students, and participate in activities that are important during the adjustment to college.
