ONEONTA, N.Y. - Senior Abby Cummings (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genessee HS) became the all-time kills leader in Hartwick College history in a grueling five-game match-up against Union at the Oneonta State Tournament. The Hawks fell to the Dutchwomen 27-30, 25-30, 33-31, 33-31, 15-6 in the first match of the season, Friday afternoon. Hartwick rebounded and dumped Clarkson 30-27, 31-29, 32-30 in the day's finale.
Cummings posted 22 kills, 36 digs, and added five service aces in the loss to Union. The senior needed 13 to surpass former career leader Krissy Westfall (1,053 kills) for the all-time lead prior to the match. With her 22 kills, Cummings pushed her career total to 1,063. In addition, her five aces brought her to within four from passing former Hawk standout Erica Henderson for fifth all-time in school history.
Sophomore Christina Evans (Cedar Hills, Utah/Lone Peak HS), who was playing her first collegiate match, recorded 11 kills and 24 digs, while Darcy Dolge (LaGrande, Ore./LaGrande HS) collected eight kills against Union. Senior Mary Janczak (Ballston Spa, N.Y./ Ballston Spa HS) tallied 44 digs, which tied her previous career-high set against St. Lawrence on September 5, 2006. Her performance ranks as the fourth-highest dig total for a single match in Hartwick history. Freshman Megan Lemery (South Glenn Falls, N.Y.) collected 40 assists and 13 digs in her collegiate setting debut.
In the nightcap, Hartwick overcame a seven-point deficit late in game two and trailed 8-0 to open the third and final game. Cummings and Evans each posted 13 kills to pace the Hawks over the Golden Knights, while Kate Simmons (East Kingston, N.H./Exeter HS) added eight kills in the win. Janczak led Hartwick defensively with 21 digs, while Evans and Cummings totaled 18 and 15 respectively.
