Hartwick Field Hockey Outlasts Scranton

  September 8, 2007

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Hartwick outscored Scranton 2-0 in strokes to post a 3-2 victory over the Royals in field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Wright Stadium.

The Hawks received penalty stroke goals from Amanda Barton (Endicott, N.Y.) and Amanda Johnson (Reading, Vt.) while goalie Katie Thorpe (South Windsor, Conn.) stuffed four Scranton attempts as Hartwick evened its record to 2-2 on the year. Scranton fell to 1-2 overall.

Hartwick got on the board at the 19 minute mark of the first half as Barton connected on her first collegiate goal off a rebound. That would prove to be the lone score of the first 35 minutes.

The Hawks appeared to be in comfortable position at 42:41 as Jen Kaye (Altamont, N.Y.) increased the lead to 2-0 as she registered her third goal of the year off a feed from junior Annie Yager (Greene, N.Y.). However, Scranton battled back with a marker at 54:38 by Kaitlyn Tirney. Less than eight minutes later, the game was knotted at 2-2 as Sarah Scott beat Thorpe off a pass from Clare Devine.

Hartwick tallied 14 shots in the second 15 minute-period of sudden death, but couldn't solve the play of Scranton goalie Kristina Goetz. Thorpe saved 10 Royal shots and was credited with the victory.

The Hawks return to action Sunday afternoon as they host Muhlenberg College. The contest is set for a noon start at Wright Stadium.
