ONEONTA, N.Y. - Cortland (4-1) netted two goals in the first six minutes of action en route to posting a 4-0 victory over Hartwick in field hockey action Wednesday at Wright Stadium.
The Red Dragons, ranked sixth in the most recent NCAA Division III polls, opened their scoring as Katie Johnson connected with Kylie Burghardt for the first of two goals at 3:51. Kayla Chambers upped the advantage to 2-0 at 5:54 as she netted her ninth score of the year off a pass from Samantha Spehler. Johnson hooked up with Burghart once again off a corner at 15:50 to give the Red Dragons a 3-0 lead at intermission.
Brenda Semit posted the game's final goal at 50:15 of the second half. Cortland goalie Stacy Billings stopped seven Hartwick shots en route to the win. Hawk goalkeeper Katie Thorpe (South Windsor, Conn.) saved five shots in the loss to Cortland.
Hartwick, now 2-3 on the year, will return to action this Saturday morning as it hosts Stevens Tech in its Empire 8 Conference opener. The game is slated for an 11 a.m. start at Wright Stadium.
