ONEONTA, N.Y. - Hartwick's Amanda Johnson (Reading, Vt.) poked in the game-winning goal in a scrum in front of the visitors goal with just under seven minutes left to give the Hawks a 2-1 victory over Hamilton College in field hockey action Tuesday evening at Wright Stadium.
Hartwick opened scoring at 28:16 of the first half as junior Annie Yager (Greene, N.Y.) gathered in a pass from Jen Kaye (Altamont, N.Y.) and poked it past goalie Courtney DeMaria. It was Yager's first of the season. The Hawks entered the half with the 1-0 advantage.
Although Hamilton didn't have too many opportunities, the Continentals got on the board at the 4:29 mark of the second half as Christina Matulaitis beat starting goalie Mackenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, N.Y.) to equal the score.
Johnson's game-winning goal with 6:34 remaining was much like Yager's to open the scoring. The junior was in the middle of heavy traffic in front of the net and poked it past DeMaria.
Chapman, who made her first collegiate start, tallied one save to get her first victory. DeMaria kept the Continentals in the game with her 13 saves. Hartwick, now 4-3 on the year, out shot the Continentals 22-3 overall in the victory.
The Hawks return to action Sunday afternoon as it makes the trip up the road to face in town rival, Oneonta State.
