Oneonta State Shaves `Wick in Field Hockey

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Somer Shuffield's break away goal at the 78:17 mark of overtime powered Oneonta State over Hartwick 2-1 in field hockey action Sunday afternoon.

The Hawks, who fell to 4-4, opened scoring at 25:27 of the first half as Annie Yager (Greene, N.Y.) beat Red Dragon goalie Erika Dombrowski on a scramble in from of the net. The junior's second goal in as many games was assisted by Amanda Johnson (Reading, Vt.).

Trailing 1-0 at the intermission, Oneonta got on the board at 41:27 as Kathryn Kubaryk took a crossing pass from Shuffield and beat Hartwick goalie Katie Thorpe (South Windsor, Conn.) to knot the game at 1-1.

The loss marked the first time Hartwick had suffered defeat to the Red Dragons since a 3-0 decision on October 19, 1993.

Thorpe posted seven saves in the loss for Hartwick, which returns to action Tuesday afternoon as it hosts Elmira. The game is set for a 4 p.m. start at Wright Stadium.
