Student-Faculty Research Collaboration Results in Publication in Pacific Affairs

September 26, 2007

An article co-authored by Jason Stone '07 and Associate Professor of Political Science Neil DeVotta has been accepted for publication in Pacific Affairs, a leading journal dealing with Asia and the Pacific.  The article, titled "Jathika Hela Urumaya and Ethno-Religious Politics in Sri Lanka," analyzes the impact of a Buddhist monks-only party that recently came into being.

The article draws on Stone's senior thesis, which was based on field work he did in Sri Lanka during the summer of 2006, supported by a Duffy Ambassador Fund Scholarship. A double political science and religious studies major, Stone interviewed Buddhist monks about politics and Buddhism and how they interact, especially in the context of ethnic conflict.

Says DeVotta, "In the social sciences in particular, it is unusual for undergraduates to publish papers in major journals. We are proud and excited to see Jason recognized in this way."

Stone is currently studying Hindi at Syracuse University and plans to attend graduate school in comparative politics. DeVotta specializes in ethnicity and nationalism, conflict resolution, and the politics of South Asia. He is author of Blowback: Linguistic Nationalism, Institutional Decay, and Ethnic Conflict in Sri Lanka, published by Stanford University Press.

Pacific Affairs is a scholarly journal focussing on important current political, economic and social issues throughout Asia and the Pacific.Published since 1927, the journal enjoys an international reputation and attracts top scholars. It provides essential information for anyone seeking balanced knowledge of the dynamic Asian scene. Each issue contains approximately four new articles and 50 book reviews.
