Key Hartwick Activities: Sigma Tau Delta, Faculty Scholar, Research Assistant in the English Department, Judge William Cooper Scholarship Recipient
Career Plans: I'm going to Dartmouth College for the master of arts and liberal sciences program. I want to teach at a private boarding school. I like the community aspect, because it's a lot like being on a college campus. It's a different role and you're more involved with your students. That's something I look forward to.
Major Decisions: I was always above reading level, I knew I wanted to teach by 3rd grade. My junior year in high school, one teacher changed everything for me. She taught college-style and there were six people in our class, so we really got to learn the skills of writing. She made it fun and interesting, and we could take such a deeper look at things. But she also applied what we were reading real-world, so it wasn't just reading Dostoyevsky for the sake of reading it. She really applied it and looked at all the facets of it and how it could play a role in culture. She was an absolutely huge role in my decision to go into English.
Outstanding Experience: My apartment burned down my second semester here. Matt Sanford and Kim Noling and Mark Davies all told me if I needed a place to stay, I could stay with them. They just opened up their doors, and they were so supportive. They wanted me to call them no matter what—they would be angry with me if I didn't call them. To know that these people felt that connection with me where they would be comfortable opening their doors like that was a huge thing. There are just so many things—I had such great experiences at Hartwick. The support is absolutely amazing.
About My Professors: You'll definitely find any student who comes into the English department will connect with at least one professor really strongly. For me, it was Kim Noling. I connected with her instantly. She was my advisor, my boss, my professor. She was a huge connection for me. Most of my friends were English majors, and they all have at least one professor they really connected with.
