ONEONTA, N.Y. - Samantha Galm (Kingston, N.Y.) netted two goals, including the game-winner in overtime to pace Hartwick to a 3-2 upset victory over 15th-ranked Skidmore, Wednesday afternoon in field hockey action at Wright Stadium.
The sophomore ended the contest 11:20 into overtime after taking a pass from Amanda Johnson (Reading, Vt.) and beating Thoroughbred goalie Liz Cantinella. The victory gave the Hawks their third win after regulation this season. It improved their record to 7-5 overall, while Skidmore slipped to 9-3.
Hartwick opened the scoring at 13:58 of the first half as Galm netted the first of her two goals. The Hawks took that 1-0 lead into intermission. However, the advantage didn't last long after the start of the second half. Katie Potter scored back-to-back goals a little over six minutes apart to give Skidmore its first lead at 2-1. The freshman's first tally came 1:19 into the second half, while her second score came at 7:22 off an assist from Sarah Donahue.
Following a timeout, the Hawks regrouped and knotted the game at 2-2 as Jen Kaye (Altamont, N.Y.) assisted on Annie Yager's (Greene, N.Y.) third goal of the year.
MacKenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, N.Y.) was credited with four saves in the victory for Hartwick, while Catinella saved two shots in the defeat for Skidmore.
Hartwick returns to action this Saturday as it hosts St. Lawrence in a non-conference clash at Wright Stadium. The game is set for a noon start.
