In 1797, the last will and testament of John Christopher Hartwick created the establishment of a seminary for the training of Lutheran clergymen. This seminary was to be located on land purchased by Hartwick from the Indians in upstate New York.
Two hundred years later, in nearby Oneonta, stands Hartwick College--a liberal arts college dedicated to preparing young men and women for careers in the 21st century.
