Records Fall in Hawk Victory Over Keuka

  November 20, 2007
KEUKA PARK, N.Y. - Behind 36 points and 11 rebounds from Jan Cocozziello (Scotch Plains, N.J.), the Hartwick men's basketball team posted a 96-83 overtime victory over Keuka College, Tuesday evening.

The Hawks, who outscored the Storm 24-11 in overtime, put the game away with a 12-0 spurt to improve to 3-0 on the young season. Keuka fell to 0-2.

Cocozziello connected on 6 of 17 shots from the floor, but etched his name in the Hartwick record books in the victory. The junior converted 24 of 26 free throw attempts to establish new single-game marks for the storied program. His attempts made shattered the former record of 18 set by Willy Rackley versus Lehman in 1971, and most recently by Tim O'Brien against Potsdam State on January 23, 1982. Rackley also held the attempts record of 20 versus Lehman prior to tonight's effort.

As a team, Hartwick converted 38 of 51 attempts (.745) from the foul line, which also broke school records. The previous mark for free throws made was 36 against Merchant Marine on January 24, 1988, while the former standard for attempts was set on January 17, 1991 as Hartwick had 46 attempts versus Alfred.

A.J. Beaulieu (Chicopee, Mass.) and Albe Hulick (Greenville, N.Y.) both joined Cocozziello in double figures with 17 and 11 points respectively, both in reserve roles. Raymond Doyley (Yonkers, N.Y.) chipped in 8 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.

Hartwick, which led 39-38 at intermission, held a seven point advantage with about 3:00 left in regulation. After watching the lead shrink in the final moments and the game knotted at 72-72, the Hawks turned the ball over and gave the Storm a chance to win in regulation. The game went into overtime following a missed fade away by Raquan Banks with: 03 left. Banks netted 31 points in the loss for the Storm.

The Hawks will return to action November 26 as they host Skidmore at Binder Gym. Tip-off against the Thoroughbreds will be at approximately 8 p.m. The game will be part of a doubleheader with the Hartwick women, who will face Skidmore at 6 p.m.
