ONEONTA, N.Y. - Sharlyn Harper netted a game-high 19 points and two other Skidmore players reached double figures as the Thoroughbreds raced past Hartwick 66-54 in women's basketball action at Binder Gym, Monday evening.
Harper connected on 7 of 16 shots, including 5 of 10 from three-point range as Skidmore improved to 3-1 on the year. Hartwick fell to 1-2. Amber Kinsey posted 16 points and hauled down a team-high nine rebounds in the victory, while Laurel Brown added 11 points, which included three three-pointers.
Skidmore stormed out to a commanding 12-0 run in the first five minutes of the game. Hartwick managed to shave the deficit to five with seven-consecutive points. After
Danee Harrison (Ansonia, Conn.) pulled the Hawks within five at 10:46, Skidmore countered with an 8-0 run to build the lead up to a first half high at 22-9. The Thoroughbreds took a 30-20 lead into half.
Skidmore took advantage on several Hartwick miscues to open the second half and built an insurmountable lead at 49-24 on a three-pointer by Brown at the 13:53 mark. Hartwick did rally with a 23-9 run and pulled to within 58-47 on a lay-up by Harrison with 5:07 remaining, but that was as close as the Hawks would get the rest of the way.
For the third-consecutive game, Harrison led the way with a 15-point, eight-rebound evening. Freshman
Sarah Waltersdorf (Clifton Park, N.Y.) posted her first collegiate double double with a 10-point, 12-rebound evening.
Fritzi Flores (Bergenfield, N.J.) and
Katie Caddell (Amsterdam, N.Y.) each added nine points.
The Hawks will return to action Friday evening as they travel to face league-rival Elmira. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
