Hawks Remain Undefeated With Win at Elmira

  November 30, 2007
ELMIRA, N.Y. - Jan Cocozziello (Scotch Plains, N.J.) led three Hartwick players in double figures as the Hawks downed Elmira 58-44 in Empire 8 Conference men's basketball action, Friday evening at Speidel Gym.

Cocozziello netted a game-high 17 points, while A.J. Beaulieu (Chicopee, Mass.) and Albe Hulick (Greenville, N.Y.) each contributed 12 as the Hawks ran their record to 5-0 on the year. The Golden Eagles fell to 0-4 overall.

It wasn't particularly a good start for Hartwick as the Golden Eagles led for 19:02 of the first half. Bryan Mathewson's three-pointer with 14:32 remaining in the opening half gave Elmira its largest lead of the game at 12-4. Trailing 20-17 with 2:27 left, Hartwick made its move and outscored the Soaring Eagles 7-0 in the closing moments to take a four-point lead into intermission. After connecting on two free throws, Cocozziello's jumper with 57 second left gave the Hawks the lead for good. Beaulieu added a three-pointer before the buzzer to increase Hartwick's lead to 24-20 heading into the locker room.

With the Hawks holding a 28-26 advantage, Hartwick erupted with a 14-0 run to put the game away early in the second half. The spurt was started and capped off by two three-pointers from Hulick. Elmira cut the lead to as few as 11 on two occasions, but couldn't get any closer.

The Hawks shot .415 from the floor (.415), while holding the Soaring Eagles to a cold 11 of 45 (.244) on the evening. Hartwick won the rebounding battle 33-30 behind a team-high seven from Raymond Doyley (Yonkers, N.Y.). Beaulieu and Kyle Phillips (Ashland, Mass.) each hauled down six.

Jon Adamson was the lone Golden eagle to crack double digits in scoring with 11.

Hartwick returns to action Saturday afternoon as it takes on Ithaca. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
