`Wick Women Fall To Union

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Rachel Ormsby netted 17 points and Michelle Rogers added 16 as Union rallied from a 14-point deficit in the second half in a 51-47 victory over Hartwick in women's basketball action, Tuesday evening at Binder Gym.

The Dutchwomen, who improved to 5-3 overall, trailed 38-24 with 11:38 left in the second half. Union used a 17-2 run and took its first lead since the early stages of the game on a lay-up by Rogers at the 7:27 mark. With the game knotted at 46-46, Devon Ciliberto drilled a three-pointer with a tick under two minutes left to give Union the lead for good. Hartwick's last second three-point attempt hit the front of the rim and was rebounded by Ormsby. The junior stepped to the line and converted one of two foul shots to cement the victory.

After Union jumped out to a 6-0 lead, Hartwick used the three-point shot to battle back and take its first lead at 10-8 on a three-pointer from Fritzi Flores (Bergenfield, N.J.). With the game tied at 10-10, the Hawks forged ahead with an 8-0 spurt, a run that was punctuated by a three-pointer by Katie Caddell (Amsterdam, N.Y.). After Lauren McCormick answered with a lay-up at with 7:41 left, Hartwick ended the opening stanza with a 7-0 run to take a commanding 25-12 lead into intermission.

Union didn't score for the final 7:41 of the opening half and the first 2:30 of the second half. Rogers ended the drought with two free throws with 17:30 left to cut the deficit to 25-14.

The tandem of Ormsby and Rogers went a combined 11 of 23 from the floor, while the rest of the team was held to 6 of 24 shooting. Union converted 14 of its 20 free throw attempts in the victory.

Hartwick was paced by Flores, who matched her season-high with 17 points. The freshman went six of 10 from the floor, including knocking down three of four three-point shots. Flores added four rebounds, three assists and four steals in the loss. Caddell was the only other Hawk player to reach double figures with 13 on four of eight shooting. As a team, Hartwick shot 17 of 52 (.327) from the floor, but connected on 8 of 17 (.471) shots from long distance.

Union held the advantage on the glass 38-31 behind the efforts of Ormsby, who tallied a game-high seven boards. Caddell and Samantha Galm (Kingston, N.Y.) ripped down six each for Hartwick.

The Hawks, now 1-7 overall, will attempt to snap a six-game skid, January 4 as they host Empire 8 rival, Ithaca as part of a doubleheader. Tip-off for the women's game will be at 6 p.m.
