ONEONTA, N.Y. - Fritzi Flores (Bergenfield, N.J.) led three players in double figures as Hartwick snapped a seven-game losing skid with a 71-62 victory over Elmira in Empire 8 women's basketball action, Saturday afternoon.
The freshman posted a 16-point, five-rebound, and five-assist afternoon as Hartwick improved to 2-8 overall and 1-4 in E8 action.
Samantha Galm (Kingston, N.Y.) chipped in a 13-point, eight-rebound, four-steal effort, while
Katie Caddell (Amsterdam, N.Y.) added 10 points for the Hawks. With the victory, Hartwick successfully avenged a 63-54 setback at the hands of the Soaring Eagles on November 30.
With the game tied at 48-48 with 7:51 remaining, Hartwick put the game away with a 12-0 run, which was completed with a lay-up by
Cassie Dresser (Ovid, N.Y), three minutes later. In that run, Galm supplied five points, including a three-pointer to give the Hawks a double figured lead.
Elmira came out soaring in the first half and jumped to a 14-4 lead within the first five minutes of action. The Hawks endured almost a seven-minute scoring drought in the first half, but didn't let the Soaring Eagles completely run away. Trailing 28-17 with 1:54 left before intermission, Hartwick closed on a mini 7-0 run to pull within 28-24 at the half.
The Hawks held a sizeable lead on the glass, out rebounding the Soaring Eagles 43-32.
Danee Harrison (Ansonia, Conn.) hauled down a game-high nine rebounds for Hartwick. The Hawks also held success at the free throw line as they capitalized on 21 of 28 attempts, while Elmira went seven of 15 from the charity stripe.
The Soaring Eagles were paced by Bridget Cantanese. The senior connected on six of nine shots, including two-three pointers en route to a 16-point performance. Becca Fretz and Becky Peterman added 11 and 10 points respectively in reserve roles.
The Hawks return to action Friday evening as they travel to face Stevens Tech. Tip-off in Hoboken, N.J. is set for 6 p.m.
