The Yager Museum of Art & Culture at Hartwick College will host an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, February 29 for "Experiments in Space - Sculpture Models by Richard Friedberg," a collection of 20 maquettes offering a glimpse at the creative process of Friedberg's monumental metal sculptures. "Experiments in Space" is on display though April 30 at the Yager Museum.
While several of the models have been translated into finished sculptures, others are explorations of ideas, forms, and possibilities. The exhibition includes photographs of those that have been translated into finished works, and invites visitors to follow Friedberg's thinking process through a series of artistic "thoughts." In excerpts from conversations with the artist, he describes his creative process, preoccupation with scale and spatial relationships, reliance on visual language forms in creating dynamic and complex structures, and the role of color in the models. Friedberg also discusses his fascination with the Baroque churches of Rome and the ways in which models inform his pieces.
Friedberg's work has been displayed both nationally and internationally, and most recently at the O.K. Harris Gallery in New York City. He has been awarded the National Endowment of the Arts Individual Artist Grant, as well as numerous other awards, and is a co-founder of Sculpture Space, a nonprofit organization in Utica, NY, that offers facilities to young sculptors worldwide.
The Yager Museum of Art & Culture is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, from noon to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free.
