Meade and DeMola Pace `Wick to Victory

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Vito DeMola (Holtsville, N.Y.) had an impressive collegiate debut, while goalie John Meade (Fire Island, N.Y.) tallied a career-high save total as Hartwick opened the 2008 campaign with a 9-6 victory over visiting Montclair State, Sunday afternoon at Wright Stadium.

DeMola registered three goals and dished off three assists against the Red Hawks, while Meade registered 20 saves in the victory. The junior's former best was 18 set against Union and national power Nazareth in 2007. Steve Caramello (Duxbury, Mass.) and Brandon Wilk (Hillsborough, N.J.) each scored twice for Hartwick.

Trailing 6-5 at intermission, the Hawks outscored the preseason favorites of the Skyline Conference 2-0 in the third and 2-0 in the fourth. Caramello's second goal of the afternoon at 9:41 knotted the contest at 6-6. Less than four minutes later at 5:56, Wilk's second tally game gave Hartwick the lead for good. Caramello and DeMola scored insurance goals with 3:13 and 16 seconds left in the fourth period to give the Hawks some extra cushion.

It didn't take Hartwick long to get on the board - 40 seconds to be exact. DeMola opened scoring at 14:20 to give the Hawks the lead. At 10:36, Montclair State's Tyler Meixner took a feed from Mike Corsetto  and beat Meade with a man up to tie the game. Hartwick grabbed the lead once again at 2-1 as Dan Hushion (Farmingdale, N.Y.) deposited his first goal of the year at 9:30 behind Thomas Bowers The Red Hawks scored back to back goals from Kevin Dyer and A.J. Bachman 15 seconds apart at 3:39 and 3:24 left in the opening quarter to give Montclair State its first lead of the contest. The lead lasted less than two minutes as preseason All-American Ryan Welch (Greenwich, Conn.) tallied his first marker of the year for Hartwick as the period ended deadlocked at 3-3.

Montclair State drew first blood in the second quarter as Bryan Klimchak gave the Red Hawks the 4-3 advantage off a feed from Taylor Bonnerat the 10:01 mark. After DeMola tied the game at 4-4 56 seconds later, the Red Hawks regained the advantage on a man-up goal by Corsetto at 5:07. Following Wilk's first goal of the year to tie the game at 5-5, Montclair State netted the last goal before intermission as Dyer posted his second of the year at the 3:28 mark.

Bowers was credited with 12 saves in the loss.

Hartwick, now 1-0, will return to action Tuesday afternoon as it welcomes Morrisville State to Wright Stadium with opening face-off set for 4 p.m.
