ONEONTA, N.Y. - Freshman Vito DeMola (Holtsville, N.Y.) netted five goals, while senior
Dan Hushion (Farmingdale, N.Y.) added four more to pace Hartwick to a convincing 18-3 victory over Morrisville State in men's lacrosse action, Thursday afternoon at Wright Stadium.
The Hawks also received three goals from sophomore
Will Couch (Baltimore, Md.) as they improved to 2-0 on the young season. Morrisville fell to 0-1.
Brandon Wilk (Hillsborough, N.J.) gave the Hawks the lead for good 42 seconds into the game with his third score of the year off a pass from
Steve Caramello (Duxbury, Mass.). After freshman
David Aitchison (Farmingdale, N.Y.) netted his first collegiate goal at 10:54, Hushion connected on the first of his two goals in the opening period at 9:56. Up 3-0, Hartwick closed the first quarter with markers from DeMola at 9:21 and Hushion at 2:03. The Hawks led 5-0 after the first.
Hartwick extended its lead to 10-0 in the second quarter on goals by
Ryan Kloss (Hillsborough, N.J.), Andrew Kraemer (Moorestown, N.J.), two by DeMola and one by Caramello.
The Hawks opened scoring in the third quarter at the 11:21 mark as
Matt Shellard (Latham, N.Y.) connected for his first goal of the year. DeMola posted his fourth score of the game at 8:38, while Hushion netted back-to-back goals at 26 seconds apart at 4:00 and 3:34. Couch closed the scoring with 2:20 left in the third.
Trailing 15-0, Morrisville State got on the board with 11:04 left in the contest as Eric Stein posted his first goal of his collegiate career. DeMola and Couch answered for Hartwick at 10:16 and 6:20 to build the lead up to 17-1. The Mustangs sandwiched goals from Mike Pascuzzi and Tim Bobbett around Couch's third goal of the game in the closing 5:30.
John Meade (Fire Island, N.Y.) tallied two saves in net for Hartwick before handing the duties over to
Greg Polcari (Duxbury, Mass.) in the third quarter. The sophomore recorded a career-high seven saves. Sophomore
Ryan Twardowski (Emmaus, Pa.) closed out the final seven minutes and collected his first six saves of his collegiate career at Hartwick.
Morrisville State netminder Jeremy Hunt recorded 23 saves in the loss.
Hartwick will return to action Saturday afternoon as it hosts seventh-ranked Western New England. Opening face-off at Wright Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
