SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Freshman
Vito DeMola (Holtsville, N.Y.) netted three goals, but it wasn't enough as Skidmore posted an 11-6 victory over Hartwick, Wednesday evening in a non-conference men's lacrosse match-up at Wachenheim Field.
The Thoroughbreds, who upped their record to 4-1 on the year, outscored the Hawks 4-2 in the opening quarter and never looked back. With the loss, Hartwick fell to 2-3 overall.
Chris Vogler (Lynnfield, Mass.) gave Hartwick its lone advantage at 1-0 as the senior notched his second goal of the year 1:18 into the contest. After Skidmore followed with four unanswered goals, DeMola registered his first of the evening with 2:49 left in the first quarter to pull the Hawks within two.
Trailing 5-2, DeMola posted his 12th score of the year with 4:29 left before intermission to once again get Hartwick within two goals at 5-3. However, Skidmore answered and took a 6-3 lead into halftime. The Hawks shaved the deficit to two goals early in the third quarter as
Steve Caramello (Duxbury, Mass.) registered his fourth goal of the year. However, Caramello's former high school teammate from Duxbury High School, Tom Lavesque scored back-to-back goals for the Thoroughbreds late in the third to give Skidmore its largest lead of the game at 8-4.
DeMola and
Dan Gill (Massapequa, N.Y.) tallied scores in the fourth quarter for the Hawks. For Gill, it was his first collegiate goal.
Matt Levesque posted three goals and two assists for Skidmore, while Tom Lavesque, Nick Coppola, and Ben Cornell each finished with two scores.
John Meade (Fire Island, N.Y.) registered 11 saves in net for Hartwick. Skidmore goalie John Capitani collected nine in the victory.
The Thoroughbreds converted three of nine man-up opportunities and held the Hawks scoreless in three man advantage situations.
The Hawks will attempt to snap a three-game winless skid, Saturday afternoon as they host St. John Fisher in an Empire 8 Conference tilt at Wright Stadium. Opening face-off is set for 1 p.m.
