Women's History Winners, Nominees Recognized

March 20, 2008

Fifteen women from Hartwick College were honored March 17 with this year’s Women’s History Month Awards for their contributions as strong women mentors and leaders, both on campus and in the community.

Assistant Professor of Education Elizabeth Bloom, Professor of Art Roberta Griffith, Assistant Professor of History Vicki Howard, Professor of Sociology Katherine O’Donnell, Associate Professor of History Edythe Ann Quinn, and Associate Professor of Accounting Priscilla Wightman were nominated for the Faculty Member Award. The honor recognizes a mentor who has been inspirational to students and has contributed to the progress made by women. O’Donnell was chosen as this year’s recipient.

Faculty Secretary for Business Administration and Accounting Elizabeth Maldonado, Aramark Catering Manager Meg Shivers, and Circulation and Reserves Specialist Elanor Spranger were nominated for the Staff Member Award, which is presented to a staff member who respects the individuality of students and works closely with them to have a positive impact on the College community. Maldonado was chosen to receive this year’s award.

Cynthia Appiah ’08, Amanda Brinzow ’08, Melissa LaReau ’08, Danielle Peloquin ’08, Jessica Pino ’08, and Khadian Thomas ’08 were nominated for the Student Award. Pino was chosen to receive this year’s award, which recognizes a student who shows leadership by being a student advocate for campus issues and is involved in activities as a positive role model.

The women were nominated for the awards by their peers and other members of the Hartwick community. A team of students associated with the Office of U.S. Pluralism Programs, which sponsors the awards, then reviewed the nominations, as well as information about each woman’s contributions, before choosing this year’s recipients.

“Under all circumstances, the award recipient is a person for whom the evidence reveals her support for the advancement of students,” said Harry Bradshaw Matthews, associate dean and director of U.S. Pluralism Programs.

The Women’s History Month Planning Committee was established last year to bring awareness of Women’s History Month to the College. The student group recognizes and honors the contributions of women both today and in the past, and works to promote involvement in Women’s History Month, education, and diversity on the Hartwick campus.
