Skidmore Rallies For Victory Over `Wick

  March 20, 2008
ONEONTA, N.Y. - Skidmore used a 6-0 run in the final nine minutes in action en route to posting a come-from-behind 17-15 victory over Hartwick in women's lacrosse action Thursday afternoon at Wright Stadium.

The Thoroughbreds, now 2-2 overall, trailed 15-11 after Kelsey Campbell (Camillus, N.Y.) posted her second goal of the game with 10:06 left. However, Skidmore battled back to tie the score at 15-15 with 4:00 left on a successful free position shot by Claire Molloy and then took its first lead of the contest 37 second later on a shot by Allie Vogel . With 1:56 left, Kim Segalas gave the Thoroughbreds some extra insurance with a free position goal.

The Hawks, now 2-4, blazed out to a 4-0 lead in the game's first 14 minutes. Jen Kaye (Altamont, N.Y.) opened with her second goal of the year 1:53 into the contest. Jamie Boulton (Camillus, N.Y.) sandwiched a goal in between two scores by Katie Thorpe (South Windsor, Conn.) to give Hartwick what appeared to be a comfortable four-goal lead. Trailing 8-4, Skidmore rallied and scored three consecutive goals to pull within one at 8-7. It looked as if Hartwick would then take a two-goal advantage into intermission after Campbell scored with 20 seconds left. However, Skidmore controlled the draw; got a last second score by Molloy before the horn sounded, and Hartwick went into halftime holding a 9-8 lead.

The Hawks opened the second half with consecutive goals by Kaye to push the margin back up to a three-goal advantage. After the Thoroughbreds answered with three consecutive goals, and with the game knotted at 11-11, the Hawks reeled off four consecutive goals in the matter of 4:43 to take a 15-11 lead.

Laura Flynn finished with six goals and two assists to pace Skidmore in the victory, while Abbie Klaus added four goals and an assist. Liz Roche, who entered the game in relief of starting goalie Courtney DeStefano with 10 minutes left, was credited with the victory despite not registering a save.

The loss overshadowed the performances of Thorpe and Kaye, who both notched a career-high four goals. Mallory Pelkey (Gorham, Maine) added two goals and a helper in the loss. Freshman goalie Danielle DePerno (Cortland, N.Y.) had 14 saves for Hartwick.

The Hawks will look to end a three-game losing skid, April 2, at league rival Stevens Tech.
