ONEONTA, N.Y. - Vito DeMola (Holtsville, N.Y.) netted three goals and
Chris Vogler (Lynnfield, Mass.) chipped in two goals and an assist as Hartwick overcame a three-goal deficit en route to an 8-7 victory over St. John Fisher, Saturday afternoon at Wright Stadium. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Hawks.
Hartwick, which had lost the previous three meetings to the Cardinals, trailed 6-3 after Dennis Bell scored with 9:41 left in the third quarter.
Mike Robustello (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) started the comeback with a man-up goal with 5:06 remaining to get the Hawks within two.
Brendan Hamel (Hingham, Mass.) closed the scoring in the third quarter with his first of the year with 1:10 left to pull Hartwick to within 6-5. After DeMola tied the game 57 seconds into the fourth quarter, the freshman gave the Hawks the lead for good at 7-6 with 4:52 left in the contest. Vogler, who got credit for the game-winning maker, tied his career-high for goals in a game by beating Dan Serafine with 2:02 left to increase Hartwick's lead to 8-6. His only other multi-goal game in his career was against Centenary (N.J.) back in 2005. Fisher's Dave Malone beat
John Meade (Fire Island, N.Y.) as the final horn sounded to close out the scoring.
The Cardinals, who suffered their first loss of the year and fell to 6-1 overall (1-1 in the Empire 8), opened scoring in the first as Matt Kaiser connected on an unassisted goal with 7:24 left in the first. The game was knotted moments later at 6:20, as
Steve Caramello (Duxbury, Mass.) fed
Brandon Wilk (Hillsborough, N.J.) and the sophomore beat Jon Cortina for his fifth goal of the year. Hartwick appeared like it was going to break away from Fisher in the second quarter with back-to-back goals by DeMola at 12:17 and Vogler at 4:21. However, trailing 3-1, the Cardinals closed the first half with two scores of their own by Mike Cummins (2:05) and Chris Schmidt (0:55) and went into intermission deadlocked at 3-3.
The Cardinals came out and flexed their muscles early in the third quarter. Fisher regained the lead at 4-3 as Scott Bowen connected for his 12th of the season 1:49 into the second half. Malone then registered his first of two goals with 12:12 left in the third to up the Cardinals' lead to 5-3. Bell scored his fifth from Jeff Price with 9:41 in the third to give Fisher its largest lead of the game.
Meade made 11 saves in the win for Hartwick to even his record at 3-3 on the year. Serafine, who entered the game to start the third quarter, made two saves in 30 minutes of work in the loss.
Hartwick, which improved to 3-3 overall (1-1 in E8 action), returns to action March 26 as it hosts Stevens Tech. Opening face-off is set for 4 p.m. at Wright Stadium. It will mark the first ever meeting between the two schools in men's lacrosse.
