ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Aaron Civalier and Matt Aloi each scored three goals as ninth-ranked Nazareth rallied from a three-goal deficit in the deciding quarter for a 10-8 victory over Hartwick, Saturday afternoon in an Empire 8 Conference men's lacrosse clash.
Nazareth, which trailed 7-4 after three quarters, pumped in two early goals within the first 1:08 of the final period to pull back within 7-6. At 12:44, Mark Kanellis tied the game with an unassisted goal and then Aloi netted back-to-back scores with 9:33 and 8:37 remaining in the game to give the Golden Flyers the lead for good.
Matt Shellard (Latham, N.Y.) ended Nazareth's streak of five-consecutive goals with 5:46 left to get the Hawks within 9-8, however, Corey Remoli provided the Golden Flyers some additional insurance at 2:39 with his second goal of the contest.
The Hawks jumped out to a two-goal advantage in the opening quarter thanks to
Brandon Wilk (Hillsborough, N.J.) and
Vito DeMola (Holtsville, N.Y.). With the man-up,
Dan Hushion (Farmingdale, N.Y.) fed Wilk and the sophomore beat goalie Andrew Desimone to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead 3:32 into the contest. DeMola upped the advantage to 2-0 with his 22nd goal of the year at 7:19. Hartwick appeared as if it was going to carry a two-goal lead into the second quarter before Aloi got the Golden Flyers on the board with nine seconds left.
Hartwick outscored Nazareth 4-2 in the second quarter.
Steve Caramello (Duxbury, Mass.) opened the scoring 44 seconds into the contest to give the Hawks a two-goal cushion once again. After the Golden Flyers reeled off three consecutive goals to take their first lead at 4-3, Hartwick answered with three of its own. DeMola knotted the game at 4-4 with 3:22 left before intermission and then the Hawks recaptured the lead 22 seconds later on a goal by Shellard. DeMola capped off the scoring in the second quarter with 1:45 left to once again give Hartwick the two-goal lead.
DeMola's fourth goal of the contest with 11:18 left in the third period gave Hartwick a three-goal advantage, its largest lead of the match-up.
John Meade (Fire Island, N.Y.), who collected his first collegiate assist on Shellard's first goal, tallied 10 saves in the loss for the Hawks, while Desimone tallied seven in the victory.
Hartwick, 3-5 overall and 1-3 in league play, will return to action, next Saturday as it hosts E8 rival Elmira. Opening face-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Wright Stadium.
