Scholars Showcase Will Show Off the Best of the Best

May 06, 2008

Choosing just one way to celebrate students’ work isn’t an easy task. That’s why the Inaugural Community of Scholars Showcase is letting Hartwick students choose which of their projects from the academic year they’d like their peers to see.

“We’re looking for works that demonstrate students’ opinions and works they’re proud of,” Dean of Experiential and Integrative Learning Katrina Zalatan said. “It’s a students’ day, not only to share their work with their majors, but for all students on the same day to see what liberal arts and sciences is really about.”

Zalatan expects students to display more than 100 exhibits, projects, and works during the day-long conference on May 9.

“I hope all students who have something to share bring it forward,” she said. “This is a marvelous opportunity for students, and for underclassmen to see what could be in store for them and develop an expectation of what is possible. They can see how other students have taken their courses to another level.”

The Scholars Showcase was created in response to a task to choose one form of experiential learning and focus on how to sustain it on the Hartwick campus. A committee of students, faculty, and staff visited four liberal arts colleges in search of ways to celebrate the best of Hartwick. What they found, Zalatan said, were various ways for students at each school to share their work.

Recipients of Freedman, Emerson, and Duffy scholarships as well as other awards and recognitions, also have been invited to present their projects during the conference.

Descriptions of all student projects, as well as where they will be displayed, will be available before the event on the First Annual Community of Scholars Showcase Web site at http://www.hartwick.edu/scholarshowcase.xml.
