Campbell Nets Eight in Victory Over Alfred

  April 5, 2008
ONEONTA, N.Y. - Kelsey Campbell (Camillus, N.Y.) posted a career-high eight goals as Hartwick rallied two-goal deficit with 20 minutes remaining en route to a 14-13 victory over Alfred in Empire 8 Conference women's lacrosse action, Saturday at Wright Stadium.

Hartwick, which snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 3-5 overall, trailed by as many as three in the second half. Down 10-8, the Hawks reeled off six consecutive goals to grab a four-goal lead. Jen Kaye (Altamont, N.Y.) brought the Hawks within one at 10-9 with her third goal of the game with 20:18 left. Hartwick knotted the contest at 10-10 as Jamie Boulton (Camillus, N.Y.) took a feed from Stephanie Nutt (Shirley, N.Y.) and beat goalie Kate Baughman for her 18th goal of the year. Campbell then unleashed a four-consecutive goal streak of her own beginning with her 31st of the year with 15:43 to give the Hawks the advantage for good at 15:43. The senior would go and add goals 20 seconds later at 15:23, and with 10:40 and 8:35 left in regulation.

Trailing 14-10, Alfred made things very interesting down the stretch. Michelle Adams (Horseheads, N.Y.) answered Campbell's scoring stretch with three of her own, including her final one with 1:41 left to pull the Saxons to within one. Alfred had a few chances in the closing seconds to send the game into overtime, but those opportunities were thwarted by Hartwick goalie Emily Follit (Longmeadow, Mass.).

Adams scored four of her school record 10 goals in the opening half as the Saxons took a 7-6 lead into intermission. Hartwick held only two leads in the opening half. Nutt opened the scoring 2:02 into the contest to give the Hawks the 1-0 lead. After Adams scored back-to-back goals to give Alfred a 2-1 lead, Kaye and Boulton answered 21 seconds apart to give Hartwick its last advantage in the first half at 3-2.

Aside from Campbell's eight-point afternoon, Kaye finished with a career-high five points (three goals and two assists), while Nutt also contributed five points (one goal and four assists). Briana Crow (Scotia, N.Y.) tallied her first collegiate points with two helpers in the victory.

With her performance, Campbell moved up the all-time goal and point charts at Hartwick. The senior now has 191 goals on her career, which ranks fifth all-time. Campbell passed Cathy Wood for sixth on the all-time point list with 212. With her assist, Boulton moved into seventh alone on the all-time helper list at Hartwick with 56.

Adams doubled her goal scoring output in the loss. The freshman entered the contest with 10 on the year. The loss also overshadowed the effort of Emily Tobin (Penfield, N.Y.). The sophomore broke the school record for assists in a single game with eight. Elyse Caldwell (Endwell, N.Y.) chipped in two goals and an assist for Alfred, as it fell to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in league action.

Follit registered 12 saves to collect her first victory in the net for Hartwick this season. Baughman stopped 14 shots in the loss.

The Hawks return to action Sunday afternoon as it hosts RIT. The match gets underway at 1 p.m. at Wright Stadium.
