Justin Sbardella: Candidate for Student Senate President

April 08, 2008

Class: 2009
Major: Political Science
Other Clubs Involved in on Campus: WRHO, WickWire, former member of the Golf Team

Why exactly do you want to run for this e-board position?

I'm running because I am sick of sitting on the sidelines. I've seen what has happened to Hartwick student body and senate over the years. They have gone into debt and the quality of entertainment brought to the Student Body has gone down hill. I, for one, am sick of it. By getting elected I hope to bring multiple acts to Hartwick College that will entertain the student body, and bring money to clubs by means of what I believe is a fair way to divide money amongst the clubs so that every club has enough to function to it's greatest potential.

What is your campaign platform?

My platform is to bring money to clubs that deserve it and to bring more entertainment to the Hartwick Campus via Student Senate sponsored events.

What do you see as Senate's biggest weakness this year and how will you improve it for the next academic year?

Senate's biggest weakness over the last year is bringing entertainment to Campus and the Oneonta area. My first year, Senate brought Brad Sherwood and Colin Mochrie to campus and it was a hit and the first two OH Fests they brought respectable bands to campus. This year however the quality in entertainment has fallen significantly. Barely anyone has heard of the OH Fest bands and the on-campus entertainment has especially lacked. Something needs to be done about that!

Many students say that Senate does not speak for their interests but rather for those involved in Senate. With that said, how do you plan to better represent the diverse interests of the student body?

The best way that one can do this is to listen to all the students, I guess the best way to do that for myself, and members of Senate would be to hold roundtables so that the students could express their opinions.

Finally, in three sentences or less, tell students why they should vote for you.

I'm a simple man who just wants the students to be heard. I think I will bring a lot to student senate, and I hope to get a lot accomplished. I hope to bring more entertainment to campus and hope to represent the clubs in a fairer light than they are.
