Printer friendly format (pdf file)
Listed below are instructions on how to connect your laptop to a network printer in either the library, the computer lab, or the All Night Study Room (4th floor of the library). These instructions pertain to computers running Windows XP, for instructions for Windows 98 please click here.
These instructions require that you are logged into the Hartwick network first, regardless if you are using a wired or a wireless connection.
- On your computer select Printers and Faxes from the Start menu.
- Select Add a Printer which opens the 'Add Printer Wizard'. Click 'Next'
- On the next screen of the Wizard select 'Network Printer' and click 'Next'.
- Then select 'Connect to this Printer' and in the text field area underneath type the path for the printer of your choice:

After your selection click 'Next'. - On the following screen select No to making this your default printer. Click 'Next'.
- Click Finish and you're done. Remember that when printing to this printer you will need to select this printer from the print screen menu.
Note: If you have correctly installed the printer drive of choice and it is still not printing check to see if the printer is connected to the network and if there is paper in the trays.
For Windows 98
There are some minor setup differences for computers operating with Windows 98:
- Click on Start, select Settings and then Printers.
- Click on Add Printer which opens the 'Add Printer Wizard'.
- On the following screen select Network Printer and click 'Next'.
- In the Network Path field type one of the Path options from the above list. Select No to printing from MS-DOS based programs. Click 'Next'.
- Select Keep Existing Driver on the following screen. Click 'Next'
- On the next screen you have the option to rename the printer from the default product name. To locate this printer quickly in the future you may choose a more identifiable name like 'Library Printer 1'. Then select No to making this your default printer. Click 'Next'.
- You now have the option to print a test page. Unless you are near the added printer, select No and then 'Next'.
- Select Finish to complete the setup.
