UTICA, N.Y. - Hartwick captured four of six singles matches en route to posting a 6-3 victory over Utica in Empire 8 men's tennis action, Tuesday.
The Hawks, who improved to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in league play, took a 2-1 lead into doubles action. The tandem of
Dan Riviello (Clyde, N.Y.) and
Dan Meininger (Cassville, N.Y.) combined to down Ben Tigges and Khoa Vo 8-3 at number one doubles, while
Dave Altman (Katonah, N.Y.) and
Ryan Hughes (Clifton Park, N.Y.) posted an 8-4 win over Paul Alexander and Tomy Armitage at the final doubles pairing.
Hartwick increased the lead to 4-1 as
Sean Barr (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and Altman walked away with straight set victories at four and five singles respectively. Barr downed Alexander 6-2, 6-2, while Altman posted a 7-5, 6-2 win over Adam Scrozek. With the decisions, both Barr and Altman improved to 4-2 on the season in singles action. After Mike Zielenski recorded a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Riviello at number one singles to close the team score to 4-2, DesRoberts finished off the Pioneers with a 6-2, 6-4 win at three singles over Khoa Vo. Hughes, who dedicated his win to Hartwick men's soccer player Joe Gibson, tallied Hartwick's final point on the afternoon as the senior downed Shaun Kaleta 6-4, 6-4 at six singles.
The Hawks return to action Wednesday afternoon as they host Rensselaer. The match starts at 4 p.m. at the Hartwick Tennis Courts.
