ONEONTA, N.Y. - Perry Markell scored her eighth goal of the game with 1:04 remaining to give visiting Elmira a 15-14 victory over Hartwick, Sunday afternoon in an Empire 8 Conference women's lacrosse match-up at Wright Stadium.
The Soaring Eagles, who upped their record to 6-8 overall, rallied from a 10-8 deficit with back-to-back goals from Markell within 62 seconds. Mary-Kate Geratowski gave Elmira its second lead of the half with her second goal of the afternoon with 17:17 left. From that point on, goals went back and forth with the Soaring Eagles reclaiming the lead after Hartwick tied the contest. With Elmira leading by one, Emily Coats (Cortland, N.Y.) tied the game for the final time at 14-14 with 3:08 left. The Hawks, which ended the campaign with a 3-11 record, 1-7 in league play, got on the board first at 23:52 as Katie Thorpe (South Windsor, Conn.) netted her 16th goal of the year. Twelve seconds later at 23:40, Tiffanie Bishop (Shoreham, Vt.) gave Hartwick a 2-0 lead with her first of four goals on the afternoon. Trailing by two, Markell shaved the deficit to 2-1 with a successful free position shot at 23:05.
Hartwick regained the two goal advantage as Stephanie Nutt (Shirley, N.Y.) planted her ninth goal of the year past goalie Jalene McCulloch. After Elmira countered at 16:47 on a goal by Erin Kendall, the Hawks went up 4-2 on a free position shot by Bishop with 13:30 left in the opening half. The Soaring Eagles tied the game at 4-4 with back-to-back goals by Perry Markell at 12:07 and Georgia Markell at 11:26. With the game tied at 6-6, Jamie Boulton (Camillus, N.Y.) gave the Hawks the lead at intermission with her 25th score of the year. In the second half, Elmira jumped out of the gate quickly and claimed its first lead of the game at 8-7 with consecutive goals by Perry Markell at 28:45 and 28:19. The Hawks responded with three goals of their own - one by Bishop and two by Kelsey Campbell (Camillus, N.Y.) to gain the 10-8 advantage with 20 minutes left.
Geratowski finished with three goals and an assist, while Kendall notched two goals for the victorious Soaring Eagles. McCulloch turned aside 11 Hartwick shots to improve to 4-7 on the year. With her eight-goal output, Markell broke Elmira's single-season goal record with 45 on the season. The sophomore also bested her personal single-game mark, previously was six against Clarkson of this year.
Bishop (four goals, one assist) and Boulton (one goal, four assists) each finished with five-point afternoons. With her four-assist outing, Boulton moved her into a tie for fourth for career helpers at Hartwick (65). Campbell completed her career with three goals and became the fifth player in the program's history to reach the 200-goal plateau for her career. Emily Folitt (Longmeadow, Mass.) tallied 11 saves in the loss.
