`Wick Downs Terps To Advance to CWPA Eatern Finale

  April 26, 2008
ANN ARBOR, MICH - Kirsten Hudson (Wellington, New Zealand) topped the 100-goal milestone for a single season and broke a school record as 14th-ranked Hartwick advanced to its third-consecutive CWPA Eastern Championship title game with an 18-11 victory over Maryland, Saturday evening at the University of Michigan's Canham Natatorium.

The Hawks, now 28-10 overall, will take on top seeded and 11th ranked Michigan in the title game. The Wolverines advanced to the championship finale by beating #20 Princeton 7-4 earlier in the day. The showdown between Hartwick and Michigan is set for high noon. It marks the third meeting between the two schools with UM leading the season series 2-0.

Hudson and Megan Dahl-Smith (Montreal, Quebec) each posted four goals, while Ellen Sevigny (Mount Desert, Maine) and Kaitlin Leonard (Montreal, Quebec) chipped in three in the victory. Jessica McKee (Tustin, Calif.) and Barbara Amaro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) completed the scoring by posting a pair of goals.

With her four-goal effort, Hudson became only the second player in Hartwick history to reach the 100-goal plateau. Former two-time All-American Bronwen Knox posted 102 in 2005 and then a school record and national best 127 in 2006. The sophomore also broke a single-season record for points at Hartwick with her nine-point evening. Entering Sunday's title game, Hudson has 101 goals and 57 assists for 158 points, which bested Knox's former mark of 153 set in 2006.

Hartwick trailed once in the contest as the Terrapins got on the board 1:30 into the contest. On the Hawks' first man advantage, Sevigny tied the score at 1-1 with 3:58 remaining in the first off a pass from Hudson. At 1:38, Hudson gave Hartwick the lead for good with her first on the evening off a feed from Leonard. The Hawks tacked on two more in the closing 1:10 of the period - Leonard with 1:07 remaining and Dahl-Smith with 24 seconds left to lead 4-1 after the first.

After Maryland scored two straight goals and closed to 4-3 with a goal at 1:56, Amaro connected with her first of the evening 35 seconds later as the Hawks went into half leading 5-3. Hartwick outscored Maryland 6-4 in the third quarter. Holding a 6-4 lead, the Hawks went on a 3-0 run to push the advantage up to five. The mini spurt was started by Hudson's third goal of the game and 100th of the year with 5:53 left on a successful five-meter shot. The Terrapins pulled within 9-6 with 4:06 left in the period, however, Hartwick regained a comfortable four-goal margin on Hudson's final score of the game at 3:52 of the third. Maryland had a chance to shave the deficit to three, but goalie Jessica Dorman (Auckland, New Zealand) foiled a five-meter attempt to keep the lead at 10-6. Moments later, the lead grew to 11-6 as Dahl-Smith converted a pass from Amaro with 35 seconds left.

Leading 11-8 in the fourth, Hartwick put the game out of reach by connecting for three consecutive scores in less than two minutes to build the lead up to 14-8.

Dorman, who began the weekend ranked second in the country in saves, stopped 15 shots in the victory.
