ANN ARBOR, MICH. - The Hartwick water polo squad dropped a 10-7 decision to #11 Michigan in the finals of the CWPA Eastern Championships, Sunday afternoon at Canham Natatorium.
The Hawks, who saw their season come to an end with the loss, finished the season at 28-11 overall. The defeat not only snapped a 13-game win streak, but also ended Hartwick's two-year seat on the throne in the CWPA.
Kirsten Hudson (Wellington, New Zealand) concluded the season with a three-goal performance, which brought her season total to 104 on the year. The sophomore's goal output for the season ranks second on the all-time single season list at Hartwick.
Barbara Amaro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added a pair of goals, while
Ellen Sevigny (Mount Desert, Maine) and
Jessica McKee (Tustin, Calif.) each chipped in one.
The Wolverines lead from start to finish. After watching UM get a 2-0 lead, Hudson opened scoring at 3:56 of the first with the first of three goals. Hartwick trailed 4-1 after the first period.
Trailing 5-1, Hudson posted her second of the afternoon at 4:26 of the second to pull the Hawks within three. After Michigan recaptured a four-goal lead, Amaro picked up her first of the afternoon at 1:45 to send the Wolverines into intermission with a 6-3 lead.
Hartwick opened the third quarter by registering back to back goals from McKee at 4:52 and Amaro at 3:14 to pull within 6-5. Michigan countered with two of its own to push the lead back to 8-5 by the close of the third. The Hawks, which once again opened a quarter with the first goal, received scores from Sevigny and Hudson at 6:11 and 2:26 to close the scoring for the season.
Jessica Dorman (Auckland, New Zealand) was credited with eight saves in the loss.
Following the title game, it was announced that two Hawks garnered first team all-tournament accolades, while two additional Hartwick players were recognized as second team honorees. Hudson, who led the tournament in goals (13) and scoring, was joined by Sevigny as first team selections.
Megan Dahl-Smith (Montreal, Quebec) and Dorman represented Hartwick on the second team. Dorman received an extra honor, picking up the tournament's rookie of the year plaque.
