Scarcely one year since construction began, the keys to Golisano Hall have been handed over to Hartwick College President Richard P. Miller, Jr. Miller took the reigns of the new state-of-the-art academic space in a brief ceremony outside the building on Monday morning, June 2.
Surrounded by Hartwick staff and faculty, Miller presided over the sunny Monday morning event with officials from building contractor LeChase Construction Services, LLC of Schenectady, NY.
Shortly after the handoff, faculty and staff began
the process of moving into the building. The 36,000 square-foot will house Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, Political Science, Sociology, History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies, as well as Career Services and the Center for Interdependence, effectively linking important academic and experiential learning resources and underscoring Hartwick's unique emphasis on Connecting the Classroom to the World.
Miller said Monday morning that the completion of Golisano Hall ensures Hartwick's academic facilities are top-notch, as it joins Clark Hall and Johnstone Science Center in providing new, state-of-the-art buildings for learning at the College.
Further, Golisano Hall underscores Hartwick's longstanding commitment to sustainability. It is the first LEED-certified building in the city of Oneonta and Otsego County and one of only 19 LEED-certified buildings in New York State. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings.
The $12.6 million project was financed without any long-term debt to the College. Rochester-area businessman Tom Golisano made an initial lead naming gift of $5 million, and support from public and private sources, including New York State and foundations aided in footing the bill. Members of the Hartwick College community came together to make generous gifts large and small to support the substantial impact the building will have for Hartwick's students.
Faculty and staff will continue to move into Golisano Hall throughout the summer. When classes begin in the fall, more than 900 students will spend time in 45 classes each day, and some 600 will have their majors located in Golisano Hall. Forty faculty members will make their offices in the new building.
