Field Hockey Falls In Empire 8 Semifinals

  November 8, 2008
Angela Eberly

HOBOKEN, NJ - Second-seeded Washington & Jefferson scored twice in the second half to down Hartwick 2-0 in the Empire 8 Field Hockey semifinals on a rainy Saturday at De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, NJ. The Presidents advance to the Empire 8 title game on Sunday versus Stevens while the Hawks close their season with a final record of 7-11.

After a first half with very limited scoring chances by either team, Carley Riggin (Wexford, PA) and Shannon Rainey (Serena Park, MD) scored the goals in a five-minute span early in the second half for Washington & Jefferson. Following a penalty corner, Riggin scored off a nice feed from junior Rachel Mastromarino (Sinking Spring, PA) at the 54:33 mark for a 1-0 lead. Four minutes and 40 seconds later, Riggin's free hit from just outside the circle was tipped in by Mastromarino to extend the Presidents' advantage.

The Hawks managed one shot in the final 10 minutes from Angela Eberly (Harpursville, NY), but it was turned away by President goalkeeper Shelby Colyer (Oxford, OH). W&J would end the match with a 9-2 advantage in shots.

Goalie Mackenzie Chapman (Niskayuna, NY) made three saves in the Hartwick cage. Colyer was called upon to make one.

The match was the final one of the careers of Hartwick seniors Danielle Greene (Woodstock, VT), Annie Yager (Greene, NY), Jill Hughes (Brownsville, VT), Amanda Johnson (Reading, VT), and Lindsay Kurtz (Sherburne, NY).
