Von Stengel to Present Friday’s Faculty Lecture Series

December 01, 2008

Assistant Professor of Art Joseph Von Stengel will present “Appropriation and Manipulation in the Digital Age” at 4 p.m. Friday, December 5, in Eaton Lounge, Bresee Hall. The talk is part of this year’s Faculty Lecture Series.

Von Stengel’s lecture will contain two parts: a brief talk and a performance. During his presentation, he will discuss the role of mashup, remix culture—the bringing together of two or more forms of media—in today’s society. He will discuss a brief history of the practice, look at the tools used, and examine mashup, remix culture’s relationship to technology and generations X and Y.

Following the discussion, Von Stengel will present his MAshUP, RE-Mix Digital Media Show. The performance is a visual and audio experience manipulated in real time and utilizing original media and appropriated media, including movies, video games, the Internet, and digital images, as well as music, sound bites, and live audio capture.

The Faculty Lecture Series will continue throughout the academic year, with future presentations by Assistant Professor of Education Jeffrey Pegram, Assistant Professor of Education Christine Potter, Assistant Professor of Music Thomas Licata, Professor of Biology Stanley Sessions, and Associate Professor of Economics Karl Seeley. The lectures will highlight recent research by faculty members, focusing on politics, fruit flies, the digital age, positive dispositions, composers, growing hearts and brains, and macroeconomics.
