Application Process
If you are planning to pursue music as a major field of study, you are required to have an audition.
Notification of acceptance into the major will be sent directly from the music department. Admission to Hartwick College is independent of admission to the music major.
Auditions
Students wishing to major in music at Hartwick must audition with one of Hartwick's Artists-in-Residence. The audition will include a faculty interview which is a great opportunity for us to get to know you and for you to get to know us.
Each student must choose three musical works from different stylistic periods (medieval, renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, or 20th century). For vocalists, at least one composition should be in a language other than English. Each work chosen will be performed in its entirety. We will take time during your audition to talk with you—to provide an assessment of your current stage of development, and a sense of how study would proceed at Hartwick.
Auditions may be scheduled any day Monday through Friday during the fall semester pending faculty availability. To make arrangements you should contact the Department of Music at 607-431-4800 or 1-888-HARTWICK (1-888-427-8942). If you wish to be considered for a music scholarship, auditions must be scheduled before February 1. Spring auditions are accepted but will not be considered for a music scholarship.
Additional Materials
The following materials must be received at the Hartwick College Music Department at least two weeks prior to the audition date:
Placement Testing for Required Courses
First-year course work for both the bachelor of arts (B.A.) and bachelor of science (B.S.) include theory, aural skills, and keyboard study. These are areas of concentration that should ideally begin prior to the first semester of college-level coursework. Emphasis in these areas is usually available at the secondary level and it is an important commitment to make as early as possible, due to the complex nature of the musical medium.
If you would like specific guidance in preparatory work, we can connect you with the appropriate faculty once you have been accepted to the college and our program. Placement testing for these required courses for the major will occur during the first week of classes.
Scholarships
A limited number of competitive scholarships are available to students majoring in music and music education who demonstrate strong performance skills and musicianship in their audition. Need based scholarships in the amount of $500 to $5,000, awarded in the freshman year are renewable for the sophomore through senior years. These scholarships are awarded by the financial aid office based on the music department recommendation following your audition and interview. Scholarship applicants must also possess the academic achievement necessary for admission to the College.
Application Process
Please remember that the music audition application is separate from the Hartwick College general admissions application.
