March 30, 2009

Hartwick College is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Michael G. Tannenbaum to the position of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, effective July 1, 2009.

Tannenbaum will serve as the College's chief academic officer, and will work collaboratively with the faculty to establish priorities and standards of excellence for Hartwick's academic programs and activities. He will oversee the implementation of Hartwick's innovative Three-Year Bachelor's Degree Program.

"Out of a robust group of qualified candidates, Michael Tannenbaum stood out as particularly prepared to guide the development of the College's academic program," said Hartwick College President Dr. Margaret L. Drugovich. "Michael appreciates the power of scholar-practitionership, and has demonstrated his understanding and enthusiasm for Hartwick's goal to be the best at melding liberal arts education with experiential learning. He is an excellent fit for our community, and I am delighted that he will join us in our work."

Tannenbaum currently is the Dean of the School of Science and Professor of Biology at Marist College. An advocate for students and a student-centered approach to learning, Tannenbaum's experience includes curriculum and program evaluation and assessment. He previously served as Convener (department chair) and Associate Professor of Biology at Truman State University, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences at Marshall University, Visiting Scientist at Colorado State University, R.C. Edwards Research Fellow at Clemson, and postdoctoral fellow at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

With more than 25 years of experience in higher education, Tannenbaum is active with the Council on Undergraduate Research, The American Council of Academic Deans, and the American Association of Colleges & Universities, the academy's leading advocate for liberal education. He also is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, American Society of Mammalogists, Environmental Consortium of Hudson Valley Colleges and Universities, National Science Teachers Association, and Sigma Xi.

The recipient of a Ph.D. in zoology from Clemson University, Tannenbaum received a bachelor of science in biological sciences from Cornell University.

"I'm excited to have the opportunity to become the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Hartwick College," Tannenbaum said. "The opportunity to be a member of the leadership team at an institution with Hartwick's mission and reputation ideally matches my personal and educational philosophies. I look forward to building on Hartwick's commitment to a culture characterized by close student-faculty collaboration in experiential learning opportunities of all kinds. Hartwick's emphasis on creativity, resourcefulness, and excellence provides the ideal learning environment. Hartwick offers outstanding opportunities for teaching-learning partnerships--both on and off campus. I look forward to working with the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of Hartwick College in all aspects of campus life."
