SCHENECTADY, NY - Hartwick's men's tennis team fell one match short on Wednesday in its final tune-up for the Empire 8 Semifinals on Saturday, 5-4 to Union College. The Hawks close out the regular season with an 8-8 overall mark.
The Dutchmen led 2-1 after doubles play. Peter Dumas (Albany, NY) and Matt Whitty (St. Catherines, ON) won in second doubles 8-4 over Union's Sam Ringel and Saul Kurtz for Hartwick's only doubles win.
In singles, Jeff Boyd (West Newbury, MA) won his third straight match, 6-2, 6-0, over Union's Alex Katz. Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico) took his third consecutive contest in second singles, 6-1, 6-4. Dumas won his fourth straight match in fourth singles in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, (5-7), 6-3. Sean Barr (Scarsdale, NY) fell just short in the final singles match, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to UC's Matt Goodnow.
The 8-8 Hawks are back in action Saturday in Rochester against top-seeded Ithaca. The Hawks oppose the Bombers at RIT 10 a.m. A victory puts them in the E8 title match against either Stevens or RIT Sunday at 10 a.m.
